Pilgrims Progress

Friday 25 June

After a riotous evening of seeing England succumb to Portugal only Georges and Odette's feast could assauge our dissappointment- and satisfy our Rabelaisian appetites. But it was a wonderfully quiet start to the new day in the sleepy hamlet of Gredals. Only the occassional farmyard cry broke the air. A short drive to Las Canals for breakfast was followed by a coach ride northeastwards to St Pierre de Bessuejouls, a tiny church, its upper level revealing beautifully detailed sculptures.

The early promise of a hot day was by now fulfilled and we relished the cool of its interior, but after singing vast amounts of slow polyphony I felt I'd done quite enough penance as a pilgrim. Another gargantuan lunch guaranteed a fully comotose state unduly terminated by my 'voluntary' participation in a yoga class (more penance?)

Our final self-flagellatory activity was yet another rehearsal followed thankfully by a pantagruelian feast!
